The Bible of Animation

Last week in class we learned about the 12 principals of animation that all cartoon should follow.   The principal basically line up the physics of how a cartoon should be drawn to make the action more fluid.   When read they seem like basic common knowledge, but watching early animations I realize that these principal were just being established, and how much the affect the motion of the animation and are still followed seriously today.

Felix the cat was a great example of the 12 principals starting to be used heavily.   Arcs, staging, anticipation, and exaggeration (although crude) were very apparent all through the film.   This was a great example of the early beginnings but it is undeniably Walt Disney with his constant perfectionism who established these principals as the standard and thus the Bible for good animations.

They seem simple but since class, I have been observing animations to see if they are still tried and true today.   Sure enough I've noticed that high-quality and believable animations use those very same 12 principals.   Since that class session I find myself paying more attention to the action rather than the story line of the animation.   These principals are obviously are the Bible as they are still tried and true and used today.

Interesting blog, principles are important in every industry and task. Everything has principles and in order to be successful the principles have to be set, as a source of structure.
