Walt Disney: Like it or not they’re here to stay.

Chapter 2 of our text talks about the growth of Walt Disney in the animation world. Like anyone else these days I grew up adoring the magic that has always surround the characters of Disney. As a child my parents actually purchased shares of Disney’s stock that I still own today. And since the purchase of the stock to today, that value has grown 10 times over. Disney has undeniably been the backbone to the growth of animation to what it is today.

There are a lot of my friends that grew up loving Disney animation, but now seem to be bitter about the aura surrounding the corporation. They seem to love the animation with the name Disney was associated with Mickey and Goofy, but now that they are older they hear Disney and a multi billion dollar company, they feel that it is an evil presence. Reading this chapter has only reassured the fact that Disney has gotten to where it has today by creating and recreating works of art that continued to set the bar in the animation world. However in this country it seems that we have been trained to hate big business. We feel like the big business controls the whole industry. However, we often forget that even though the business has a dominating say in the industry, it has to answer to a boss with far more power than its board of directors, the consumers. Disney has to produce what the people want, or they can pack their bags and leave it to some who will.

But before I keep making this sound like a Wall Street Journal entry, I will bring it back to the animation. Full length animated movies that have been on the “big screen” since before my parents were born. I’m not saying that all the Disney movies have been milestones in the life of animation, but Disney has created many benchmark movies that have changed up the standard for animated movies. In recent years this has come to include movies such as Toy Story, a motion picture entirely animated with computers. And with the release of the popular Madagascar there is no foreseen end to the Disney reign.

Oh the humor of it all - people are using blogs to advertise - tricky, tricky...

Alright, now as for your recent blog, I'm interested in how you've pointed out how large the Disney corporation has become. I don't know if I have so much a problem with big companies like this... but it all depends on how their films are turning out. Personally, I still think Disney retains a certain magical sense. And yet - I think the animations of its past far surpass anything made in recent years. (I give Madagascar a thumb's down). I think Disney has some major competition with Pixar, etc...
Perhaps some of the downfall, if I may say so, has partly resulted because of the passing of the great Walt, himself. But yes - big companies, as you stated seem to simply show how hard they've worked - they deserve it - sooner or later another will be viewed as superior. I do also think that notice should be given to independent animators who, though they may not have the staff of equipment, have the skill nonetheless.

I thought it was good how you stated that every Disney full length animated film as not been a huge milestone because it is true. Some of their movies were not as creative as ones before.
It is clear to see the advancements in technology that they have made since making Snow White. Technology is always growing and I believe Disney will always be thinking of new ways to use that technology, but I think when it comes to storytelling they are running a little thin on material.Don't get me wrong I love Disney but how many different ways and with different characters can you spin the so called "cinderella story," of girl loves boy, boy loves girl, but the villian does not want them together, etc.

` GARH! VILE SPAM! Thankfully they're erasable.
` Neat article. Most Disney movies I think are kinda dumb, though my favorite has always been The Lion King for some strange reason.
` Come to think of it, when I was 12 I drew about a thousand frames from the video for practice.
` Well, I was bored.
